483. Rathfarnham

An historic village retaining all its old world charm, Rathfarnham Village has been enhanced by the Rathfarnham Village Initiative of South Dublin County Council. Rathfarnham Castle, a castle under restoration, was built in 1585 for Archbishop Adam Loftus and was one of the largest residences in Dublin, with no less than eighteen fireplaces. Much of the castle's interior decoration, including eighteenth century rococo plasterwork, survives.

486. Sandycove

This seaside suburb is located around a pleasant harbour and has a famous Martello Tower where the writer James Joyce once stayed for a week as a guest of poet Oliver St John Gogarty. It is also the birthplace of Irish patriot Sir Roger Casement (1864-1916).
